Special Care Center

Organ transplant center

Introduction

This refers to a surgery that replaces the organs of terminally ill patients who are difficult to recover with existing treatments with healthy organs from brain-dead or living donors. In Korea, since the first successful kidney transplant in 1969, solid organs such as the kidney, liver, pancreas, heart, lung, etc., and tissues such as the cornea, bone marrow, bone, ligament, cartilage, and heart valve have been transplanted.

Since the establishment of the Organ Transplant Committee in March 1990, the Chosun University Hospital Organ Transplant Center has had an Organ Transplant Coordinator since 1996 and has been dedicated to managing all tasks related to organ transplantation. Recently, to promote organ donation, we are conducting an organ donation campaign in conjunction with universities and local communities, and are also actively promoting public relations to the public through various media.

With the implementation of the Brain Death Act in February 2000, we were designated by the government as a specialized organization for the management of brain dead patients (HOPO), and were designated as an organ transplant medical institution and an organ transplant registration institution to systematically carry out tasks related to brain death management and organ transplantation that had already been carried out in the past.
A living kidney transplant in 1991, a brain-dead kidney transplant in 1998, a brain-dead liver transplant in 1999, a living liver transplant in 2000, and a cornea transplant in 2002 have consistently shown high success rates, and bone marrow transplants are also showing good results. In addition, by forming a cooperative system with hospitals that are leading domestic medical groups in the field of organ transplantation, the success rate of organ transplant surgery and post-surgical management system are on par with the leading medical groups in Korea.
